You Can and You Will

I have been pondering a certain statement, actually two statements the past couple of weeks. One that I heard in a movie recently and it was this, ‘’I either live free or I die.’’ This was a statement by the lead actress in the movie, ‘’Harriet.’’ I highly recommend this movie as its very empowering and really impactful as it tells the American slave story of Harriet Tubman. Harriet is so inspirational in her courage, strength and complete reliance on the Holy Spirit or what they call in the movie, ‘’spells.’’ After years of being raised up in slavery, seeing her sisters sold off to slavery and separated, she finally decided that she

was going to escape. Her normality she no longer wanted to be reality anymore. Instead she fled and travelled all by herself to escape to freedom. While on the journey, she is caught by her ‘’slave owner,’’ having the choice of either jumping this bridge she was on to escape yet once again or being captive by her enemy. She had a choice to make in a moment of crisis. This statement ‘’I either live free or I die’’ were her final words before finally jumping off the bridge.

Of course we know she does live and finally after miles and miles of travel, she makes it to her final destination, freedom. I began to think, she took a lot risks to get there, life or death risks at that. She quickly realises that there are many back home that she needs to get and bring into this new found freedom. The facility owner of where she managed to live thought that she was absolutely crazy for wanting to travel all the way back and risk her life over and over again to save those that were still being kept captive, but she did. Fast forward and she is in a meeting with the Underground Railroad Group. They are discussing when and if they can continue rescuing lives that are much further away. Harriet with her boldness refuses to stop as the officials do their best to talk her out of such nonsense as the travelling distance would be much further and that it would be an impossible task. She quickly responds saying that no one will tell me that I can’t because I will! All the while, in this amazing story she was led by the Holy Spirit to lead all of these people to freedom, just like she had found. As we know she strategically led countless lives to freedom in the end because of her bravery and willingness to take risks.

Back to reality, a couple of days later I was asking my son, Elias to do some more difficult homework as to which his response was, ‘’Mommy, I can’t do it.’’ My immediate response was, ‘’We will not say I can’t in this house.’’ Maybe that was a bold statement to make to an 8-year-old, I don’t know however as soon as I said it, I felt the Holy Spirit speak the same thing straight back to ME.

I believe that the Holy Spirit was speaking through this movie and conversation I had with my son all in the same week. I couldn’t really stop thinking about the story of Harriet Tubman and the statement that I made to my son for several days. I began to ask Holy Spirit, what are you saying to me and what are you wanting me to learn? And this is what I can conclude…

The Holy Spirit is asking are you willing to take risks for the sake of other people? Quit allowing the torment of the enemy to drive you into a corner that is not of the Kingdom and is not of Me. Quit saying, I can’t! Fear, I believe is the root cause of our tendency to be timid, hidden and feeling like you’re not good enough. He is saying you have to GO and follow my lead at any cost. Do not look to the left nor to the right and certainly not behind you. I am taking you on a journey to full freedom in Me right now and you are about to step into new found territory in this season. Do not let I can’t be in your vocabulary. It is not Kingdom language. There is no longer room or time for ‘I can’t.’ I have already given you the authority, the blessing, the permission and the weapons to do everything I have called you to be and do. Your freedom in me will release freedom in other people. Just like Harriet said, I either live in freedom or I die.’’ In her case it meant physical death, but symbolically and metaphorically it wasn’t physically dying, but dying in the spirit as to the point where you are not effective to see the change that God is wanting you to bring to people around you. Your normality is getting ready to change to abnormality to what I am taking you to. Every move closer to true freedom.

Be a person of consistent faith, valor, courage and bravery as you walk into the fullness of His freedom. It’s YOUR choice. Do not waste the time but give the time to bring others into that same freedom. I will give you a running spirit straight into freedom and a heavenly determination that only I can give. I am propelling you forward into a new season and now is the time to look up and step out. I once read that the devil’s greatest fear is a church without fear. What a powerful statement. Why? Because he knows that if we live in fear we will put limitations on ourselves rather than fully coming into the true light and freedom like we know we can live in and be. You will look back and not recognise your own identity because it has been clothed in His identity and miraculous power.

So here are some scriptures that come to mind:

Ephesians 4:21 ‘’If you have really experienced the Anoited One, and heard the truth, it will be seen in your life; for we know that the ultimate reality is embodied in Jesus.’’

Ephesians 3:20 ‘’ Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energizes you.’’

Psalm 27:1-4 The Lord is my revelation-light to guide me along the way; he’s the source of my salvation to defend me every day. I fear no one! I’ll never turn back and run from you, Lord; surround and protect me. When the evil ones come to destroy me, they will be the ones who turn back. My heart will not be afraid even if an army rises to attack. I know that you are there for me, so I will not be shaken. Here’s the one thing I crave from God, the one thing I seek above all else: I want the privilege of living with him every moment in his house; finding the sweet loveliness of his face, filling with awe, delighting in his glory and grace. I want to live my life so close to him that he takes pleasure in my every prayer.’’

When you say, I can’t, He says, YOU CAN and YOU WILL.
